September 26, 2009. Durango, CO. - The Fort Lewis College Football team knew what they would be up against, but that wasn't enough to hold off the RMAC powerhouse, Mesa State earlier this afternoon as the Mavericks made quick work of the Skyhawks 38-7 in front of a large home crowd. Fort Lewis is now 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the RMAC.
The Mavericks managed to get two quick touchdowns in the first quarter, both on four yard runs. The Skyhawks were able to put together a drive at the end of the first quarter and in the first five seconds of the second quarter, the Skyhawks lit up the scoreboard on a nine yard fade route from Tim Jenkins to Justin Johnson to make it 14-7. On the following drive Mesa State scored on a bootleg pass that left G. Chernoff wide open for a 57 yard touchdown making it 21-7. After a few four and outs by the Skyhawks, the Mavericks were able to knock in a 43 yard field goal to go up at the half 24-7.
The first three minutes looked promising for the Skyhawks as they started to march down the field but a backwards pass was batted and recoverd by a Mesa defender and returned for a 40 yards touchdown, giving the Mavericks a 31-7 cushion. The Mavericks were able to put one more touchdown up five minutes later on a 12 yard pass to close out the scoring for the game at 38-7.
The Skyhawks tallied 255 total yards on offense, with Jenkins going 26-39 and 210 yarsd in the air with one TD. Brandon Schneider led the team in receiving with 8 catches for 59 yards. Sam Apraku rushed for 25 yards on 12 carries.Linebacker Joel Johnson led the defense with 10 tackles followed by Colin Barrier and Dimitri Scotto who had 7 apiece.
Fort Lewis will play again next week as they travel to Gunnison to take on Western State, Saturday October 3, at 1:00 pm.
